Hyman Hetchin was a Russian Jew who fled the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 and settled in Britain where in 1922 he opened a shop in Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham, north London, selling household appliances, gramophones, records and later bicycles. In 1934 he began his collaboration with Jack Danny, an innovative frame builder who had experimented with the bending of tubes to make the bicycle more flexible and comfortable and, again in 1934, sensing the commercial potential of this innovation, he patented the project with Danny. In 1936, with this type of frame also known as “vibrating”, Hetchin won the Olympics, significantly increasing sales. Later the Hetchins were used by many corridors, especially during the six days and on the track. The Hetchins frames, in addition to the curvature of the rear tubes, are highly appreciated for the refinement and elegance of the particularly worked junctions which make them among the most sought after among collectors.
